Letters to the Editor: Village Bandstand Committee Retires

September 16, 2010

To the Editor:

The village bandstand summer concerts are over and it is time to thank our benefactors. One of our earliest and continuing friends is Steve Shand, who replaced and extended copper gutters which he furnished when the bandstand was constructed 25 years ago. The Tim Patterson crew of paint contractors repainted the entire structure as a gift.

A grant received from the office of the Orange County historian covered much needed repairs: power washing of the structure, replacement of broken posts, stabilizing the stairs, repairs of broken electrical outlets, cutting of bushes to allow the air circulation around the apron to prevent wood rot, repair and sealing of the floor and removal of four large bags of trash. Branches that lean over the roof will be removed in the near future as the last expense of the grant.

Monetary donations were received from the Friends of the Cornwall Public Library, the Santoro family, Jim and Mary Lulves, Dean Satterly, Brendan Coyne, Loretta Faning, Kathleen Ferraro and Carmela Yerdon. Mary Donahue of our Bandstand Committee is the one who pvides the patriotic bunting and Christmas decorations as well as talented offerings of calligraphy and fine painting. Did you all see the miniature bandstand she made for her July 4th float in commemoration of our 25th anniversary?

Peter Osinski is the committee member who contracts the musicians, a job formerly held by Andy and Jeanne Maroney. Scotty Taylor keeps track of our gifts and thanks donors with a bandstand postcard.

This committee was formed 25 years ago to plan a 100th birthday celebration for the incorporation of the village. It was decided to build a bandstand in the likeness of one built by mead & Taft in 1885 as a lasting remembrance. Bill Fulton arranged to have it constructed at Dutchess County BOCES where he was an instructor and the village DPW, along with Cornwall Coal and Supply, transported it to the village. Bob Sholler was with that original DPW crew and many a tale could be told of that eventful day. Bill Fulton and Bill Finnigan cleaned and treated the floor every spring as long as they were able.

Later the village agreed to maintain the bandstand and Jeanne Mahoney wrote a grant which has become available. One of the village board members has taken on the spending of this grant. We hope it will cover the cost of replacing the flag pole and eventually replacing the floor.

Therefore, after 25 years, the Bandstand Committee is happy to relinquish our job and announce the retirement of our committee. We have provided our village with a unique and beautiful structure with help from donors in the community and the music each summer has hopefully enriched the lives of all of you. Our last job as a committee will be to arrange the annual tree lighting, sing-a-long and visit from Santa at the Storm King Fire Engine Company on December 5th.

In appreciation of 25 years of service,
Colette Fulton

Comments:

Thank you for all that you have done for our community. The bandstand has become the centerpiece of our village, and over the years we have enjoyed so many concerts there. Next summer you can all bring your chairs, sit back, relax and just listen to the music! Again, many thanks.

The bandstand reminds us of how much can be accomplished when the community works together. Thanks to all who served on the Committee.

And let's not forget all those not on the Committee who give year after year to help make the bandstand the focal point it is: the Cornwall Garden Club and Randazzo Landscaping for their labors from spring thru fall, SKE#2 for tackling the tree at the holidays, and Mr. Yannone and all those who make New Years Eve the wonderful celebration it is.

I sure don't mean to leave anybody out. All deserve our thanks.
