Obituaries: Sean F. Thompson

June 21, 2023

SEAN F. THOMPSON
September 17, 1956 – June 17, 2023
Cornwall, NY

Born on September 17, 1956 in White Plains, NY to Jack and Jean Thompson, Sean was raised primarily in Brewster, NY. He graduated in 1974 from Brewster High School where he excelled both academically and athletically. Sean then attended SUNY Plattsburgh, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Chemistry, and competing for their NCAA Track and Field Team where he made lifelong friends. Plattsburg is also where he met and married his loving wife of 41 years, Jean Marie Thompson (Vititow).

Pursuing a career in education, Sean began teaching at Don Bosco Preparatory High School, Ramsey NJ (1985-88), and spent the bulk of his career teaching at New York Military Academy in Cornwall-on-Hudson, NY (1988-2017). Sean completed his career, earlier than anticipated, at Oakwood Friends School in Poughkeepsie NY (2017-2023). Throughout his career, he taught chemistry, physics, math of all levels, and photography and was a successful, passionate three sport coach (cross country, basketball, and track and field).

Sean was an avid reader with a thirst for knowledge. As Sean liked to say, whatever trivia team he was on would be “the winning team”. He was intelligent and knowledgeable across a broad spectrum of subjects. Sean was kind, gentle, supportive, patient, loving, and generous, with a great sense of humor. He made an impact on so many people throughout his life. Sean was respected and loved by students and colleagues, and adored by his family and friends. His guidance, wisdom, and “dad jokes” will be greatly missed. Sean is probably looking down on us, eternally grateful that home and garden projects are no longer his responsibility.

Sean is survived by his wife: Jean; their children: Megan Gebert (Joseph Gebert) and Matthew Thompson (Katelyn Jones); grandchildren: Natalie and Jack Gebert; his siblings: Mary Thompson, Ann Thompson (Mark Taper), and Patrick Thompson (Tiffany Thompson); and brother-in-law: Ray Sechrist; as well as many nieces and nephews. Additionally, he is survived by lifelong friends who were as important to him as family. He was preceded in death by his parents John “Jack” Thompson, Jean Thompson (Starratt), and his sister Eilleen Sechrist (Thompson).

Sean passed away peacefully at home in Cornwall, NY in the presence of loved ones on Saturday, June 17, 2023 from Renal Cell Carcinoma.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 22nd at Quigley-Sullivan Funeral Home, Inc., 337 Hudson St. Cornwall-On-Hudson, NY. Reflections and a Celebration of Sean’s Life will begin at 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in honor of Sean Thompson to Oakwood Friends School. Funds specified to Sean will be used for a memorial tree along the last stretch of the cross country course, now known as “Thompson’s Turn” to serve as a reminder of the importance of strength and perseverance. Any additional funds will go to supporting arts and athletics at Oakwood in Sean’s honor. https://www.oakwoodfriends.org/forms/donate-to-oakwood-friends-school/

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan for their kind and loving support and outstanding care. Donations to Hospice of Orange and Sullivan in Sean’s honor would also be greatly appreciated.
